Six Reasons Why Office Sharing is Better Than Working From Home
Working from home can seem attractive to women with young children. However, the idea is often much
better in theory than in practice.
Office sharing (renting a desk in someone else's office) is catching on amongst women who want to manage
their overheads but whose dream of working from home has become a bit of a nightmare. Here are some reasons why:
- When you work from home people don't tend to believe that you're really working. Your friends expect you to be
able to meet them for lunch and your husband thinks nothing of asking you to pick up his dry cleaning etc. If you
work in an office your work and 'play' time is clearly divided and people understand that you cannot run errands
and socialise during the working day.
- You think that by working from home you will be able to spend more time with your children. In practice though
you find yourself telling them constantly, "Not now, darling Mummy's working". This can make you feel very guilty
and can upset your kids. Working in a shared office avoids this problem completely and when you come home in the
evening you can give your children your full attention.
- Mums working from home have all experienced the embarrassment at one time or another of their children crying
in the background or nagging them when they are on the phone to clients. Working in a shared office guarantees you
a professional environment in which to conduct business.
- How often have you sat down at your desk in the morning only to find important reports scribbled on with
crayons? Chances are if you are a work at home mum, this will have happened. Of course this is a practical
impossibility if you share office space with adults!
- You find yourself getting up earlier and earlier if you work at home and have children just so you can cram
a few more hours work in before you have to attend to the kids. This can be incredibly draining. By working in a
shared office you have control over your working hours.
- The biggest reason why shared offices are better than working from home is that the latter means that you can never
completely switch off from work because you never really leave your office behind.
